There can be many reasons someone experiences back or neck pain. Most of the time, the cause is somewhere other than where the pain is located. Our therapists are experienced in assessing how the whole body moves to attempt to find the cause of the pain, rather than just treating the symptom. Our therapists have additional training in the McKenzie method of treatment, joint mobilization, myofascial release, and applied functional science, all of which can assist in the treatment of spine pain.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition, usually caused by overuse of the hands on the job or with recreational activity. The condition results in nerve entrapment near the wrist, which can cause pain in the hands and even up the arm. In addition to assessing how your whole body is moving, we often use our ASTYM treatment to assist in addressing this problem.
There are several types of arthritis, and our treatments will be altered based on the type you have. The most common is osteoarthritis, which is a chronic degeneration of the cartilage in a joint. While we cannot “grow” more cartilage, we can do things that can improve the pain caused by this loss of cartilage. Sometimes improving strength and/or flexibility at the joint, or above/below the joint, can significantly reduce pain. We also have multiple modalities to help with pain, including heat/cold treatment, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound , all of which can provide temporary relief as you work on strength and flexibility.
Tendonitis means “inflammation of a tendon”, the structure that attaches our muscles to the bone. While some people do have this, often times they actually have a “tendinosis”, which is a generic term for a condition of the tendon where the tendon fibers split and begin to move in an unnatural way. We often use our ASTYM treatment for this condition, in addition to treating any strength or flexibility issues we discover throughout the body. As with other conditions, the cause of this condition is not at the site of pain.
Fibromyalgia is a condition noted for causing pain in multiple muscle groups and can also cause feelings of fatigue and cognitive changes. Sometimes excessive exercise can make these symptoms worse. It is important, therefore, to progress activity cautiously. Our therapist have extensive experience treating this condition and often utilize pain modalities and hands-on treatment, such as myofascial release, to manage it.
A stroke, or CVA, is caused by a lack of blood flow to a part of the brain, either by a blood clot or a ruptured blood vessel. This can cause significant and lasting weakness, loss of sensation, vision changes, and cognitive changes, among other symptoms. While it is important to receive treatment early after a stroke, many people can improve over time, with a commitment to exercising appropriately and regularly. Our therapists have extensive experience working with patients who have had CVA/stroke, and we offer a membership program to clients who wish to continue exercising under supervision once formal physical therapy has ended.
Balance problems are one of the most common reasons people are referred to physical therapy, and it is a condition our therapists have extensive experience treating. There are many reasons people can develop balance problems, including muscle weakness, poor flexibility, vision changes, and inner ear issues. We perform a whole body analysis to determine the cause of each patient’s balance problem and develop a program to address the cause(s).
